WE MUST WORK TO ENSURE THAT ACADEMIC STRUGGLES

DO NOT OVERSHADOW YOUR  RELATIONSHIP WITH YOUR CHILD

Some basic questions we will be discussing:

  • What are  Executive Functioning skills?
  • How do they impact the academic success of my child ?
  • To what extent should I help my child with their school work?
  • When I should get professional help for my child?
  • Should I meet with the teachers?
  • What questions should I be asking at a meeting?
  • How should I handle problems with a teacher?

We get one shot at this. We don’t get a ‘do over’. Often the consequences for our children’s academic struggles are beyond our control. A level of negativity can develop in the household  about – this is not what you had envisioned for your children’s formative years.

If you have older children who do not have these struggle you wonder why one child is doing fine and one child is not.  If your struggling child is your oldest, this is yet another new challenge of parenting. You might be asking, "Why is ‘this’ not working out for my child"?

ASIDE FROM ACADEMICS

Many parents and families are effected by the emotional component of your child’s struggles.

  • Does almost every conversation with your child end up with a talk about how they’re doing in school?

  • Does almost every conversation with your child's (other) parent end up with a conversation about how they’re doing in school'?

  • Does almost every conversation at dinner, or when the family is together, focus on how they’re doing in school?

  • Is this causing damage to your relationship with your child?

  • Is this interfering with your relationship with your other children?
