GRADE TO GRADE TRANSITIONS
The transition to the next grade, especially when it involves transitioning to another school as well, can be difficult for some children. Simply transitioning to a new semester class can also be stressful. Your child might feel overwhelmed by the teacher's expectations, worried about a new physical surrounding, a new teaching style, or anxious about meeting new students. They are often convinced that they are the only person struggling with these changes.
These struggles can be temporary and short lived if they are addressed as soon as you realize it is beyond a reasonable period of time for an adjustment. Some students take longer to adjust than others and might need help for a little longer. Some students thrive on change; some just don’t. Transitions are hard for them and changes are very disruptive to their comfort level. The short-term goal of this type of support is to address the specific areas which are challenging to your child, nip it in the bud, and shorten the adjustment period as much as possible.
We will make sure that your child makes a successful grade transition at the elementary, middle or high school levels. We will address and deal with any of the issues that arise from the next step in their academic journey.
BEYOND ELEMENTARY AND MIDDLE SCHOOL
You might feel this is the time to consider a private school for your child. The process of deciding if public school or a private school is the best place for your child, what your criteria are for choosing a school, and what might be the best school for your child can be an arduous task. The goal, as would be with a college, is to find the best match for your child. The best school for your child is one which is the best match for your child's strengths and challenges, and one where your child can reach their highest level of success - academically, socially and emotionally.
I can work with you and your child in order that a well-informed decision is made in all the facets of this important decision and help clarify the short term and long term goals which drive this journey.
BEYOND HIGH SCHOOL
No worries about your child being accommodated at the college/university level! I will ensure your child receives the accommodations for which they are entitled. We will put safeguards into place to make sure they are implemented properly, as well.
I have counseled many high school students, who either have an IEP or a 504 Plan, regarding concerns they might have while making this major transition in light of their disability or specific challenges. Additionally, I have also been a counselor in a Center for Students with Disabilities in a New Jersey college. Your child should be entering their freshman year with these accommodations already in place. We can talk about how to do this, and make sure we are leveling this new playing field. If desired, I will accompany you (geographic logistics notwithstanding) if you plan on meeting with the people who will be helping your child in this facet.
You child should not enter their first year at any college blind sided or confused about this part of the college transition. Your child will enter confident that the situation has already been addressed, everything is already in place and everyone and everything is all set!
